Server-side JavaScript has really started to take off, with a num ber of great projects pro vid ing dif fer ent pieces of the puz zle. This talk will intro duce server-side JavaScript and pro vide an overview of the exist ing projects as well as some ideas about where it’s all going in the future.
Tom will look at how the var i ous JavaScript run times, such as V8 and Rhino, affect devel op ment and pro vide their own unique fea tures. You’ll also see the stan dard i s ation effort of Common.js and why it’s shap ing how peo ple write server-side JavaScript.
All the lead ing SSJS frame works – Node.js, Narwhal, Jaxer – will be dis cussed as well as some more quirky uses of JavaScript on the server such as CouchDB and YQL.
Tom Hughes-Croucher is an Evangelist and Senior Developer in Yahoo’s Open Strategy Group, focusing on Yahoo¹s Web Services and Cloud Platform. Tom joined Yahoo! to work on the Yahoo! frontpage in Europe as a Front end engineer. He brought his experience from contributing to a number of Web standards for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the British Standards Institute (BSI).
Before joining Yahoo! he helped build the online music stores for some of the UK’s largest brands including Tesco, Three Telecom and Channel 4.
