HTML5 APIs Will Change the Web: And Your Designs
HTML5. It’s more than paving the cowpaths. It’s more than markup. There’s a lot of stuff in the spec about databases and communication protocols and blahdiblah backend juju. Some of that stuff is pretty radical. And it will change how you design websites. Why? Because for the last twenty years, web designers have been creating inside of a certain set of constraints. We’ve been limited in what’s possible by the technology that runs the web. We became so used to those limits, we stopped thinking about them. They became invisible. They Just Are. Of course the web works this certain way. Of course a user clicks and waits, the page loads, like this… but guess what? That’s not what the web will look like in the future. The constrains have changed. Come hear a non-nerd explanation of the new possibilities created by HTML5’s APIs. Don’t just wait around to see how other people implement these technologies. Learn about HTML APIs yourself, so you can design for and create the web of the future.

SXSWi Panel: Everything You Know About Web Design Is Wrong
Just as early filmmakers struggled to break free from the conventions of live theater, after 10 years Web designers are still trapped in the structures of the past. Forget pages, linear text and other archaic vestiges of design’s print ancestry; the separation of content from presentation has already changed everything.

Design for Irrational Behavior [SxSW 2009]
The core of sustainability efforts is behavior change, understanding patterns of behavior and developing models for motivating sustainable behavior change. This approach assumes a rational response from the consumer. However, most decisions are irrational. This panel will examine how to motivate people to make sustainable changes by appealing to their emotions instead. This panel is sponsored by frog design.

Oooh, That’s Clever! (Unnatural Experiments in Web Design)
Find inspiration in the ridiculous. See technological quirks as opportunities. Try something previously unheard of with your site design. Laugh in the face of convention. Use and abuse CSS in ways never before imagined. Get away with it. And if it doesn’t work, try something else instead.
