  1. Pakistan: The Geopolitics of a Precarious State - FPRI

April 29, 2012 Pakistan combines three combustible elements—Islamist militancy, nuclear weapons, a weak state—not to mention an uneasy relationship with another nuclear weapons state, India, with whom it has a dispute over Kashmir, plus an increasingly uneasy relationship with the United States. Pakistan is the world’s sixth largest country, and the Muslim world’s second or third largest country.

  2. Multimedia: Islamism and the Arab Spring - FPRI

May 7, 2012 Though many of the protest movements associated with the Arab Spring appeared to be largely secular in nature, Islamist parties have been winning elections across the region, causing unease and uncertainty both domestically and abroad. U.S. policymakers and analysts have been divided thus far in their responses to this turn of events. How should the U.S. deal with the new regimes that bear a distinctly Islamist character? What will be the state of U.S. alliances in the new Middle East and North Africa and how will they affect our core interests in the region? It is critical for Washington to understand the individual groups that are gaining power in the Middle East and North Africa and to define its interests and goals in dealing with these new power holders. These questions will be addressed in FPRI’s Panel Discussion, which will bring together recognized policy and academic expertise to examine these challenges and their implications for U.S. foreign policy.

  3. Multimedia: Muscle-Flexing, Quiet Diplomacy, and Iran’s Nuclear Program - FPRI

February 27, 2012 The new U.S. sanctions on Iran have led to heightened tension and escalating rhetoric between Iran and the West. Recently, the IAEA reported that Iran has begun enriching uranium at its underground facility at Fardow, near Qom. In addition to these recent developments it is likely negotiations with Iran (within the P5+1 framework) will take place sometime during the next few months to discuss Iran’s nuclear program. This discussion will outline the view from Israel regarding recent events, and attempt to explore a range of possibilities for the West’s diplomatic strategy during the next six to ten months based on recent Track II discussions.

  5. Taiwan’s Presidential and Legislative Election:

FPRI Senior Fellows Shelley Rigger, Vincent Wang, Terry Cooke and Jacques deLisle assess the elections’ meaning and implications: Why did the winners win and the losers lose? What does the outcome portend for cross-Strait relations during the next four years? What is likely to be the impact on U.S. policy toward, and relations with, Taipei and Beijing? What are the implications for the future of Taiwan’s democracy and for the significant economic, social and foreign policy decisions Taiwan’s government faces in the near term? January 20, 2012
