Daryl reviews the gekiga/manga titles The Push Man and Other Stories and also Abandon the Old in Tokyo by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Clarissa reviews the recent anime series Black Lagoon, and Gerald reviews the second of the Robot Romance Trilogy, Voltes V. The comics contain lots of dead babies, they probably shoot babies in Black Lagoon, and women are repulsed enough by 70s super robot anime such as Voltes V that they miscarry.

  1. Robots and Media: Science Fiction, Anime, Transmedia, and Technology | MIT Comparative Media Studies

    Ian Condry, Associate Director of MIT Comparative Media Studies and Associate Professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures, will discuss the prevalence of giant robots in anime (Japanese animated films and TV shows). From the sixties to the present, robot or "mecha" anime has evolved in ways that reflect changing business models and maturing audiences, as can be seen in titles like Astro Boy, Gundam, Macross, and Evangelion. She will explore of how science fiction has shaped ideas of the relationship and role of robots in human society, how the existence of such robots is feeding back into science fiction narratives, and how we might experience transmedia properties in the future using robotic technologies.

  2. Panel Borders: The work of Adrian Tomine

    Eagle Award winning writer and artist Tom Humberstone talks to American comic book creator Adrian Tomine who writes and draws the comic book Optic Nerve, originally self published and now serialised by Drawn and Quarterly. Collections of short stories from the comic, entitled Summer Blonde and Sleepwalk, have just been published in the UK by Faber and Faber. Adrian is also the editor of a series of collections of the work of underground manga creator Yoshihiro Tatsumi including Abandon the old in Tokyo and The Push Man and other stories. Tom and Adrian talk about working in comics, Adrian’s artistic influences and interests, his graphic novel Shortcomings and his involvement in bringing Tatsumi’s work to the attention of a new generation in the West.
