  5. The Incomparable #82: Apocalypse Book Club

It’s the end of the world! And since our eyeglasses are intact, we have time enough at last, to read. We discuss Maureen McHugh’s "After the Apocalypse" short-story collection, Cormac McCarthy’s "The Road," and other apocalypse tales we have known. Do zombies have their own David Attenborough, leading expeditions into Cleveland? Why should you be afraid if heavy snowfall combines with the appearance of strange invisible magic ghost sex-dragon monsters? And why does John Siracusa plan to ride out the apocalypse in style? We ask several of these questions, but you’ll have to listen to see if we ever answer any of them.

  6. Aspect Radio #48: COWBOYS & ALIENS, Trailer Talk, Top 5 Alien Invasion Movies

Corey and guest host Phil Owen take on the latest in cowboys fighting aliens movies, ahem, “Cowboys & Aliens,” director Jon Favreau’s big budget adaptation of the lesser known graphic novel.

While the film looks great and is packed with star power and special effects, it just doesn’t seem to deliver on its promising concept of mixing the two beloved genres of westerns and science fiction.

Also on tap are new trailers for Peter Berg’s board game adaptation “Battleship” and producer/co-writer George Lucas’ Tuskegee Airmen adventure “Red Tails.”

Finally, the guys unveil their top five alien invasion movies, which include “Independence Day,” “Mars Attacks!” “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”

  7. Matthew Baldwin: Autism In TV And Movies

One of the pleasures of watching movies and television is finding characters you recognize from your own life. Matthew Baldwin is a Seattle–based writer, and he spent a long time looking for a specific kind of character — someone with autism. That’s because his son was diagnosed with autism in 2006 at the age of two, and back then Matthew only knew about one portrayal of autism in media: Rain Man. Matthew tells KUOW’s Jeannie Yandel about two other characters he was happy to discover recently; Abed from the NBC sitcom "Community" and Spock from the 2009 Star Trek reboot.

  8. Audio Interview With Visual Effects Master Douglas Trumbull ~ Criticize This!

Brilliant visual effects master Douglas Trumbull got his start at a young age working on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Although he was only in his early 20s during production of 2001, his contribution of figuring out a way to film the now-famous "Stargate Sequence" changed the special effects industry drastically and made films like Star Wars possible (Trumbull himself was asked to work on Star Wars but turned it down due to other projects at the time).

After 2001 wrapped, Trumbull went on to direct his own films, including Silent Running (1972) and Brainstrom (1983), as well as working on the visual effects for The Andromeda Strain (1971), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), and Blade Runner (1982). He also designed the Back to the Future Ride at Universal Studios during the 80s, and has been a leader in creating special effects technology.
