The American Life: My Big Break

How does Ira Glass keep finding these amazing stories? I particularly loved ‘Act One’ told by Sixties comedy duo (and married couple) Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall: the act that had the bad luck to appear on the same Ed Sullivan show as the Beatles.

"i met casey rice just once in boston when he was on tour with sigur-ros. i was a big fan of thrill jockey and jade tree and those so-called "chicago music", so i was really excited to see one of the masterminds. he was really nice too, nice enough to convince me to move to chicago, hoping i could get to hang out and work with him on some cool "chicago" projects. but when i moved to chicago, casey was ready to move out. i called him up but he was too busy, and a few weeks later he moved out of chicago. now i was stuck in chicago in the worst days of g.w.bush-depression. i lost job twice, lost directions, and ended up giving up on anything. i felt like going no where, depressed, sad and lonely. casey rice ruined my life."

  3. Speechification: A Cymbal Tale

"Andrew McGibbon is a speechification favourite. An original voice, an even more original perspective, and he always make programmes about unexpected and delightful topics. This one, as you might have guessed, is about cymbals - a history and exploration taking us from before the Bible to after Spandau Ballet, including the 32nd oldest company in the world. Excellent, funny, informative - full of facts you’ll want to repeat to people in the pub."
