  3. Creating an Internet of Entities

    The Internet today consists of a morass of partial and redundant content: the ~17m businesses and POI in the US, for example, are duplicated over 1.2 billion website across over 5 million domains. This tangle of duplicate, fragmentary, and often incorrect information ensures that unequivocally identifying a person, place or thing on the Internet will always be a challenge. The members of this panel are working to fix this, and will discuss their projects in the Library, Government, and Big Data sectors to create an Internet where real-world people, places, and things can be referenced unambiguously. It focuses on pragmatic, real-world examples: the panelists from Factual, the Sunlight Foundation, Jetpac, and the Internet Archive each highlight their specific experiences in creating platforms and apps that identify and disambiguate individual entities across applications and verticals, and describe both the pitfalls and benefits of working towards an Internet of Entities.

  4. Scalability: Covering Your Rear with a Good Backend

    With nearly 2 billion people online worldwide and the potential for online startups to become the next big thing overnight, companies must be prepared to handle the massive amounts of traffic they strive to acquire. However, not everyone with an idea for a potentially successful website is a network engineer. This panel will inform those who run startups, or companies that are thinking about changing their infrastructure strategy, about the latest options for building out the networks from multiple executives who have had success with the options on both ends of the spectrum, hand build servers to 100% in the cloud. Panelist will discuss options in infrastructure housing, such as: in-house, outsourced or in the cloud. They will also address the pros and cons of each, what kind of business models will benefit the most from which network configuration, and the immediate and long-term costs involved.

  5. How Progress Bars Change the Way We Live

    Once upon a time slow connections begat the Progress Bar - bloated sites would taunt us with ‘15% loaded’ screens. High-speed promised to kill the beast and free us from their tyranny but yet it lives! Progress bars are being used MORE lately to direct user actions. Look to Farmville and LinkedIn which push their users to collect 100% of their personal information. Incomplete progress bars are an itch that needs to be scratched. They carry the implicit language that declares ‘You are here’ but more importantly ‘The end is in sight’. Game design motivates us through incremental, measurable progress towards a tangible goal but is this the way real life works? Is the progress bar’s ubiquity in technology starting to affect the way we measure progress in meatspace? This panel will reach far across time and space to look at the story of progress bars, why they hypnotize us and what we need to do - slay the beast once and for all, or throw ourselves into its partially-complete embrace…

  6. Designing Ideas, Not Objects

    More that ever, the design of things is driving change into markets, and defining the idea of what a company means to its constitueants. Today, you can’t just create something, make and deliver it, and then expect it do well. Products must be more than just a “thing”. They need to built off relevant ideas, and the story needs to be driven throughout the entire proposition in an authentic way. Though observations and work examples, designer RobertBrunner will talk about why the notion of "ideas, not objects" is so important now, and how he and his company have created products that embody this principle. Highlighted will be his work for Barnes and Noble, Polaroid, Fuego, and Beats by Dr. Dre.

  7. The Why & How of Decentralized Web Identity | SXSW 2011 panel

    The big players in social networking are setting a plodding pace of innovation. New startups, keen to offer useful and exciting new means of communication, have migrated wholesale to platform-based approaches. Constrained by what it means to be boxed into 140 characters or Facebook’s vision of a lifestream, we’re left without a compelling view of what "social" means on the web. It’s time to take back our identities, and with it the web. We’ll discuss examples of how the web is more Awesome when people are a part of it (and not just a layer on top of a few companies’ databases). We’ll talk about what kinds of approaches make sense in this new world (and which don’t), and discuss some successes (and failures) that have happened along the way. Parts of this discussion will be technical; you can’t build the web without some HTML, and we can’t build a social web without getting our hands dirty. However, tech is boring. You can always look up how to do something - knowing why you want to do something is the hard part. We’re going to look beyond the modern gold rush, and talk about ideas that have lasting value for content providers, producers, and consumers, and why you should care.
