  1. Jam Session: What Improvisation Can Teach Us About Design

Have you ever had a spontaneous creative triumph, perfectly in sync with your team?

A passionate believer in improvisation as a design skill, Hannah’s session will talk about the importance of this technique in her own design process and what lessons can be borrowed from improvised music.

From the jazz masters to the humble basement band practice, musical concepts such as timing, structure, rolls and expression have many lessons for designers creating an off-the-cuff interface.

Hannah will explore how the methods of music translate for a design/development team, as well as sharing personal stories and techniques for those times when you need a bit of a jam session.

  2. Ge Wang: New Expressive Social Mediums on the iPhone

Due to their mobility, intimacy, and sheer strength in numbers, mobile phones have become much more than simply "miniature computers," increasingly serving as personal and "natural" extensions of ourselves. Therein lies immense potential to reshape the way we think and do, and especially in how we engage one another socially.

This presentation explores the iPhone as a unique platform for creating new expressive, social mediums. As case studies, we demonstrate and examine how Smule’s "social sonic artifacts" (e.g., Sonic Lighter, and Ocarina) were able to take full advantage of the iPhone’s intersection of technologies (multitouch, powerful mobile CPU and GPU, full audio pipeline, GPS/location, persistent data connection via 3G/Edge) to provide a unique experience that is at once expressive on a personal level, and social on a global scale.

  3. Slava - Sunflower

Moment Sound celebrates the release of "Sunflower", a diverse collection of songs from one of our primary founders, Slava. For the past several years Slava has been playing and organizing events throughout Chicago focusing on the advancement of live electronic music and art culture. Like his many performances, Sunflower spans a wide array of styles while maintaining a certain atonement that is uniquely "Slava".

Beyond the use of complex harmonies and unpredictable yet familiar melody lines is an almost obsessive approach to texture and timing. This is what happens when you put a jazz-man on a beat machine. His coolness transcends the temporality of trend and the artistic result is well-rounded music. Simultaneously ingenious and humble, the overall sound of this release can be described as contemplative, ambient yet attention grabbing, aromatic. Stay tuned for more release and live recordings from Slava in the near future.
