    In 1970, futurist Alvin Toffler brought out a soon-famous book called “Future Shock”. It described a world in which people could no longer keep up with the pace of change.

    In 2013, big thinker Douglas Rushkoff is out with a book called “Present Shock”. It describes a world in which the change has arrived. In a digital tsunami. And we are lost in it.

    Tumbling in an overwhelming, almost tyrannical, “now.” A present in which we’ve lost our cultural narrative, our past, our future. We can drown or we can thrive, he says.

    With Tom Levin, a media theorist at Princeton, we are catching up with not just the everyday “fabulousness” of “surveillent narcissism,” but a wider wave of misgivings about the digital information revoluton — questions, complaints and reassessments being raised by, for example, Jaron Lanier, Daniel Gelernter and Jonathan Zittrain, among others. “The only hope for social networking sites from a business point of view,” Lanier writes, “is for a magic formula to appear in which some method of violating privacy and dignity becomes acceptable.”

  8. Minister of Information

    Edward Tufte is perhaps the country’s foremost evangelist for the clean, clear and rich presentation of complex information. The Obama administration’s stimulus package is flooding the economy with 787 billion dollars for employment and public works projects. Put the two together, as Obama did earlier this month when he nominated Tufte for the stimulus advisory board with the hopes that the public will have a fighting chance of understanding where the stimulus money went and what it’s doing.

  9. Christina Wodtke - Social Spaces Online: Lessons from Radical Architects

    While Information Architecture took its name from architecture, it took very little else. This is not surprising, as the early days of the web were about making sites that supported the interaction between people and data. The obvious model back then was a library; a library is a space for humans to receive knowledge. But with the rise of social networks, and the integration of community into almost all online experiences, more architecture practices are directly transferable to design. Online spaces are no longer just about findability, but about falling in love, getting your work done, goofing around, reconnecting with old friends, staving off loneliness… humans doing human things.
